FAREWELL TO A BELOVED WIFE AND COMPANION
AUGUST 2024
Minnie, - a rich legacy of constant love, appreciation of the natural and beautiful things in life and optimistic hope.
I must have been born under a lucky star
My best piece of luck was the day I met Minnie at a dance in the Swindon Town Hall in early 1957.
My next piece of luck was her saying yes twice. First time when I asked her to dance that first lucky day. And then just three months later she said yes she’d marry me! And I had almost missed her train when she agreed to a first date ….
Then she married thrice lucky me and along came two more marvels - Helen in Aldershot 1959 and Jane in Kluang 1960
And then another piece of luck that lasted the rest of my time in the army when Minnie stood by me through thick and thin - my friend, my companion, my ever loyal uncomplaining hard working wife. How lucky I was that she stuck with me through those last years in Malaysia, Mexico, Germany and the UK.
And then the next best piece of luck her agreeing to come with me bringing with her Helen and Jane to a new life in New Zealand to a renewed and closer family.
Minnie was the steadfast rock – the base for the continuation of our strong family ties, above all a loving caring Mum who guided and helped Helen and Jane through the teenage years, school, university and early adulthood, She it was who provided the home base for all three of us.
Then more luck, and all because of Minnie …..the arrival of Charlotte, Madeline and Alexandra and yet more extended family links How much luck can one man have? It has continued for the rest of our time together here in New Zealand. She was a super wife, a super Mum and a super Gran.
It is perhaps a bit hackneyed to say, but nevertheless true, that each generation stands on the shoulders of the previous one. Minnie was the one constant in the lives of all of us here today and it is through her that our family has its strong ties with and of good memories of the past. Her example is the basis for all of us continuing into the future with hope and renewed sense of purpose.
Minnie is not leaving a hole in our lives, she is leaving us a rich legacy of love and strong family ties,
Hers is an example of how to live and appreciate the best and the value of the natural things of this world. We will do well to remember the rich legacy she has left us as a well spring for renewal and to continue in our own lives.
